Aadhaar Photocopies to Be Banned: UIDAI Shifts to QR Code Verification

Aadhaar Verification Goes Digital: No More Photocopies Needed

Handing over a photocopy of your Aadhaar card has long been a standard requirement at hotels, telecom stores, offices and events. But this traditional practice is set to end soon. As per a PTI report, UIDAI is finalising a new rule that will stop organisations from collecting or storing physical Aadhaar photocopies. This shift will bring a major change to how identity verification is carried out across the country.

The primary reason behind the move is enhanced security. Millions of Aadhaar photocopies stored in files and cabinets pose a risk of data misuse. By eliminating paper copies, UIDAI aims to protect citizens’ personal information and minimise privacy breaches. Instead, verification will now rely on secure digital methods.

The new process will make use of the QR code printed on every Aadhaar card, which carries encrypted basic details. This allows instant identity verification by simply scanning the code — without exposing the full Aadhaar number. UIDAI is also developing an offline verification app that lets service providers authenticate Aadhaar even without internet access.

However, businesses that depend on Aadhaar verification — such as hotels, telecom providers and event organisers — will now be required to register with UIDAI to access the new verification tools. This will ensure a uniform, secure and updated system for all.

UIDAI’s CEO has confirmed that the new rule has been approved and will be notified soon. With this, the era of Aadhaar photocopies is ending, making way for a more secure, digital-first identity verification system across India.
